Un uomo scopre un varco spazio temporale che lo catapulta nel 1958. Buona parte del romanzo si svolge tra la fine degli anni cinquanta e i primi anni sessanta, quando si fumava ovunque, quando la carne sapeva di carne, quando gli odori erano forti, e quando la musica era ben altra. A rimarcare il tempo della storia, numerose canzoni fanno da sfondo alle mirabolanti vicende di Jake Epping.
